Museums are often called cemeteries
of art. Bangalore is a city rich in both art and architecture.
The museums here have preserved the centuries old art
and architecture. They are the best place to explore
the history of the place. You can even have a glimpse
of remains from Mohenjodaro civilization at Government
museum. Experience a whole range of folklore, costumes,
beautiful artifacts, animated masks, equipments of warfare,
weapons, household articles and what not!
The exhibits have been preserved well and presented
in well organized manner. You can read or study more
about the exhibits from the information displayed along
their side. At Nehru Planetarium, your children will
understand the basics of physics in very interesting
as well as interactive manner. The place is also ideal
for understanding space sciences.
Karnataka Folk Museum
Located on the Kumara Park West, Sheshadripuram, and
the folk Museum is managed by Karnataka Janapada Trust.
It has an impressive collection of folk music and videotapes
of folk dances. Many unique masks, colorful artifacts
and costumes have been displayed here.
15 acres of lush green trees surround this museum.
You can walk through the shady walkways leading to most
of the buildings inside the museum. The Lokamahal is
the most comprehensive, housing a number of interesting
folk puppets, utensils, instruments, weapons and masks.
While a variety of utensils, baskets, and earthen jars
used to store grain and pickles are displayed in the
Lokamatha Mandira, the Chitrakuteera has a number of
photographs covering different aspects of folk life.

Government Museum
Established in 1886, the museum is one of the India's
earliest museums. This beautiful building with splendid
Corinthian columns, was constructed in 1877. The museum
provides several enthralling hours of antique viewing.
There are different sections like natural history, geology,
art, sculpture and numismatics. You can find relics
dating back to 5,000 years to early Indian Civilization
of Mohenjodaro.
At this museum, you can also find prehistoric finds
of Neolithic period that were unearthed during Chandravalli
excavations. South Indian jewelry, clothing and intriguing
stones are some of the exhibits in the museum.
You can also find some exhibits that speak of battle
between Tipu sultan and Britishers. There is a slab
within the museum which has 12 Persian couplets, brought
here from Tipu's Palace.
Timings: Museum remains open from 9:00am to 6:0pm.
Closed on Wednesdays and public holidays.
Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium
Jawahar Lal Nehru Planetarium If you want to enjoy the
marvels of the universe, visiting Jawahar Lal Nehru
Planetarium is a must. The planetarium was founded in
1989. It has a dome with 150m diameter upon which night
sky is projected. The hall has a seating capacity of
210 and is equipped with space meter. 2 lakh visitors
visit the sky theater annually.
There are exhibition halls that have a high educational
value to those who want to learn more about the topic.
The exhibitions include Astro-photographs, Cartoons,
Paintings and quotations.
Also on display are giant color pictures of Galaxies.
Supernova remnants Nebulae etc. A set of paintings and
sculptures are on permanent display. A Weighing Scale
shows one's weight on all the planets and also gives
a print-out. A Science kiosk donated by IBM, India is
installed in the exhibition hall.
Other feature of the Planetarium includes a science
park that aims to educate children about science in
a playful manner. There is a sky simulation activity
undertaken on first Sunday of every month. Visitors
are provided with a star chart of the day and taught
its use. The activity ends with star viewing through
a telescope.
Large proportion of the population at this planetarium
views special astronomical event like eclipses, shooting
stars, meteors etc.
Government Aquarium
Situated at Cubban Park, this is the second largest
aquarium in the country. You can find a great variety
of edible as well as cultivable variety of fish. The
diamond shaped building has three floors. The ground
floor has the office and the laboratory. First floor
has 14 big tanks of cultivable fish. Second floor has
both large and small fishes kept in separate tanks exhibiting
their habitat.
Some of the fish that can be seen at the aquarium are
catla, mahseer, gold fish (including black moor), angel
fish, blue gourami, red tail shark, Indian tiger barb,
glow light tetra, freshwater prawns and of course the
Siamese fighters.
Aquarium remains open for public viewing on all days
of the week.
